University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Carolina North Master Plan

The University of North Carolina’s main campus is approaching maximum capacity. To meet growing program needs a new campus, Carolina North, will be established on University land just north of downtown Chapel Hill.

Carolina North will be a new model of sustainability with its own distinct style and character. The planning process emphasized integrated design solutions for efficient and responsible use of resource management. The University will limit development for the next 50 years to the disturbed area of the site – 250 of 980 acres total. The primary use of the disturbed area is a regional airport.

The plan employs select elements from the main campus and a structured open space network to create context for the first program and support facilities built on the site. The open space network is organized around the airport runway and existing natural areas to create a monumental vista and natural landscapes.

The final plan takes maximum advantage of the already disturbed area with an East-West orientation; this arrangement also allows a strong response to solar south. The plan employs an open space network of four primary elements to create an immediate sense of place for the new campus and much needed context for the first buildings on the site.

1. Campus Frontage — establishes identity with a stone wall, trees, and green areas
2. Entry Drive — brings the community into campus
3. Central Green Way — connects town and campus to the forest
4. Working Landscape — integrates open space with surrounding forest and supports sustainability goals
