For the fifth time in school history, North Carolina ended the season as National Champions. Behind stellar play from Ty Lawson (21 points and a championship game record 8 steals), Wayne Ellington (19 points), and Tyler Hansbrough (18 points), the Tar Heels defeated Michigan State 89-72 in front of 72,922, the largest crowd ever to watch a National Championship game. Not since Duke did it in 2001, North Carolina won every game of the Tournament by double digits.

I'am a Kansas fan . I have the utmost respect for the North Carolina program,but don't leave out 08-Kansas,07-06 Florida 04Uconn in the disscution of best teams of the last 20yrs.

This same UNC team was DESTROYED BY KANSAS in 2008. The only reason UNC won this title (although it should have been vacated due to the fake-classes scandal) is because Kansas players left school early for the NBA draft, while the UNC players came back. Kansas would have repeated otherwise. There were several INELIGIBLE players on this UNC team because they enrolled in the bogus classes. In many people’s minds, this title is vacated due to the BIGGEST SCANDAL IN NCAA HISTORY!!! That scandal has RUINED FOREVER the status of UNC basketball. Phony classes were used to prop up UNC athletes for more than 20 years. Imagine the recruiting advantage that gave UNC over its rivals over the years. Imagine a recruit trying to decide among Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, and Kentucky. It’s then leaked to him that if he goes to UNC, all he has to do is play basketball and not have to worry about academics…so he chooses UNC! North Carolina should have received the death penalty!!! Unfortunately, for the rest of college basketball, UNC is the NCAA’s chosen one, and the NCAA will protect it at all costs!
This still hurts as a Michigan fan and loss to Duke
UNC was actually challenged in the second round by LSU that year – that game was tied at 63 with about 5 minutes left before they ran away with it to win by 14. They were never threatened in any other game – and their last 4 tourney wins, which are supposed to be the toughest games, were all blowouts within the first 5-10 minutes.

Ty Lawson, Danny Green, Tyler Hansbrough…. What in incredible trio! I loved this team. I know UNC lost to Duke the other night I'm the ACC tournament. But watch out for them in the NCAA tournament. I think they will be tough. Also Roy Williams does such a great job with his players, getting and keeping his players in shape to Sprint up and down the court all game…. Go Tar Heels!!
The lost in the final 4 the year before after coming back from 40pts down against kansas having the core of the 2008 team returning for 2009 they returned on a mission. A NCAA title mission. Being a actual tarheels fan i said before that season startedthey would be the title winner cause coming so close they came back with PURPOSE. One of my favorite carolina teams ever
Before this season started, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said North Carolina was basically an NBA team. I don't disagree.

Psycho T was my favorite Tarheel. He wasn't the most gifted, but he played with the most heart and competitiveness of any player I've watched since the late 70's. T always played like his life was on the line if he should lose.
