Duke vs. UNC Basketball 1979

Feb. 24, 1979. High scoring Duke is favored at home over UNC. Coach Dean Smith decides to hold the ball and stall for the entire first half. His plan backfires as his team doesn’t score a point; Duke leads at halftime 7-0. Those seven points come back to haunt UNC as Duke wins by 7 points – 47-40. This game is credited with leading to the creation of the collegiate shot clock.

The Duke University Archives preserves 16mm film and videotape created by the coaching staffs of the Duke football and men’s basketball programs. This site contains descriptions of the film and videotape shot, whether an access copy exists, and in some cases, the physical condition of the original film. Football films and video cover the period of 1935 to 1994 and Men’s Basketball film covers the period of 1947 to 1996. It is important to note that the films document the play of the teams and were created as tools for study and training, not for broadcast. Some films were cut and spliced, so the footage may not show the complete game or be in the order the game was played. Also not every game was filmed and there are numerous gaps in the coverage of the film. For information on how to view or request a copy of a film, please see http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/dsf

hey dukeheat!

spoken like a true dook fan… Just watch what Coach K does at the end of games to run the clock out. Looks a lot like Coach Smith's 4 corners. If u think he is an idiot for creating that strategy than you have no knowledge or respect for the game. Hate him or not, Coach Smith is one of the best of all time. Just about every coach in the game uses a lot of his strategies so make sure your comments make sense before they exit your brain.

Tony Davis says:

@dukeheat who won the week after that ?

Cross Ganaway says:

This would also be the game where the Cameron Crazies coined the phrase "air ball" when unc totally missed one of their rare first half shots.

Andrew p says:

i swear to god. art heymans my friends uncle, except he was adopted by my friends grandmother

Kenneth Cline says:

I hate it when teams stall! I've been around that situation twice in my basketball career.

dukeheat says:

That was rediculous how he could even think of doing the 4 corners. It was effective in some games but it was cheap and was a desperate attempt to win ball games. It was a good thing they put in the shot clock though. Go Duke!!!
