As a State fan I was tempted to say something snarky and rude about
him. But listening to his full press conference…"this is where I
became a Christian….this is where I fell in love with my wife" I was
really touched and felt this guy is real, principled, and flat out
brilliant. "I am proud to be African-American and I'm also proud my
wife is white". Wow.

Hubie was a senior to my junior class. A few of us enjoyed the privilege of hanging out with some of the players. There were some crazy fun times, like that night in 1990 when King Rice torched Bobby Hurley in the Smith Center. They guys I interacted with on occasion on the team, Hubie, Eric, and George, were just really great decent normal people. None of them were bigger than the moment in which they were living. Yeah they were all gods on campus and I wasn't anybody. But they were never like that. They were all humble and specifically humbled by their own situations. They knew they were blessed and they acted that way. Character guys in a character program. Dean Smith lived in and lives on in all of these guys, and Hubie, no, Hubert is the epitome of that decent human greatness. Today is another great day to be a Tar Heel. Hubert Davis will be another great Carolina coach.
