Hubert Davis, who was an assistant basketball coach for years at the University of North Carolina, spoke at his first news conference since being named successor to coaching legend Roy Williams, where one part of his comments has quickly gone viral.
When asked about the significance of being the first Black head coach in UNC history, Davis said, “It is significant. It’s significant that I’m African American, and I’m the head coach here. It’s significant. I know that in terms of Division I head coaches all around the country, only 26% of the head coaches for Division I basketball are compromised (sic) by minorities.”

What are yall's thoughts on Coach Davis comments and Dr. Umar Johnson's response?!
Greg, I have not read the comments so perhaps it's been said but I wonder if part of the motivation for emphasizing his wife and kids colors was meant to balance out his view on the racial aspect of everything. In other words, yes I am proud to be chosen as a black man, and yes there has not been as many of us as there could have been. A certain group would have been happy if he stopped there because race would have been the issue if he had. However everyone should remember what the number one job of a College head coach? Of course it is winning, and more important than everything else needed to win is no doubt "Recruiting". You can be the greatest coach in the world but if you do not get your fair share of 4 star and 5 star recruits you will not win. During this first press conference he has several goals to accomplish. He has to thank all of the people who helped him achieve this great honor. Family, community, past coaches, past teammates, and of course Roy William's. He then has to answer and address the race issue of being chosen and you have multiple groups you are speaking to. The woke groups, the older generation because they see the accomplishment differently than the younger generation. Finally, don't forget that he was also speaking to the players, both present and future. Emphasizing race early in the press conference from the perspective of being black and that blacks may have been overlooked some before his hiring could send a message that he will show preferential treatment to blacks in recruiting or in playing time, or that he is woke! The press would love to be able to write about him being woke. He needed to make sure that they could not focus on that aspect of him. He just needed to make sure the white players he wants to recruit would not think he would prefer black players out of prejudice. Plus he wants the world to know that like the famous coaches before him, Roy William's and Dean Smith, he will create an environment that does not focus on color. Instead he will be the best mentor to all of his players and will strive to put the best players on the court to help them win, regardless of color!
Something must have happened off camera that we do not know about that led him to make that statement.
I'm white and my daughter is half Khmer since her mom is from Cambodia. What is with these people and their hate of interracial relationships? I mean seriously, has no impact on them. That was disrespectful and Dr.Johnson has dissed an entire group of mixed race people who didn’t have a say in how they were born. There is nothing wrong with interracial dating/marriage.
I think coach Davis did want to stop the whole spectacle of him just being a “1st black coach”. Definitely awkward in presentation but it takes away from his merit.
It does sound like a person jealous that his own relationship is not working well. Get to the root of the problem of people like Dr. Johnson.
I get how odd it came off, but I truly believe he meant simply, as important as it is to be 1st black head coach "color doesn't mean anything".

My family is white, my son son is dating a Hispanic girl now for 4 years and we adore her because of who she is and how she treats my son. I think that is all that matters.
Because he loves his wife, and it ridiculous for us to continue to think raising one race on a pedestal is okay. The person who supported him on his journey was a white woman. He definitely should mention his counsel.

If your personal values align, then there’s nothing wrong with interracial dating and marriage. At the same time, it is awkward to be against dating your own skin color. The folks with a preferred type can waste a lot of time looking and/or end up with the wrong person.

He mentioned his wife and family in this video because my understanding is he wanted to show where he stands. He doesn’t want to be related to these crazy woke and BLM fanatics. He is proud of accomplishments of his race and himself but that doesn’t mean he has to look down on white people because his family is white.
