They're equal rivalries. Barcelona/ Real Madrid is bigger.

IMO college sport rivalries should not be compared to professional rivalries because NCAA teams are able to recruit top talent therefore big name teams like Duke and UNC are perpetually good. Duke and UNC fans don't go through the same highs and lows as Bears/Packers, Lakers/Celtics, Red Sox/Yankees fans.

In the NFL and NBA, teams are competing under a salary cap in a league with built-in parity therefore fans experience more ups and downs, struggles, defeats, etc. Annual success is never guaranteed. That's what makes a professional rivalries better, the fact that your team can be good one year and bad the next, but your rivalry remains strong regardless. Red Sox could be last in the division and Yankees-Red Sox would still be a big deal. Bears could be last in their division but the Bears-Packers games would still be massive. Pro sport rivalries are bigger than wins and losses.

When two rival professional teams are good at the same time, it means more. Whereas in college UNC and Duke will always have a decent squad. In NCAA the teams aren't competing with a cap or financial rules, so the same teams get the best recruits every single year, and the big teams usually overwhelm the lesser known teams. The yearly highs and lows, dips and turns of pro sports is unmatched which makes the rivalries a step above any rivalry in the NCAA.

I went to the wildcard game between the Sox and Yanks and there were three fights in just in my grandstand section alone. No one sat down the entire game. From Babe Ruth and the curse of the bambino, the Boston massacre, Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone, Pedro being left in the game, the Yankees choking and losing 4 straight games in 2004.. you couldn’t script a more improbable 14 games of baseball than the 2003 and 2004 ALCS. The off-season in between 03’ and 04’ the best player in baseball said “I want to play in the rivalry and tried to take a reduced salary to play for the Red Sox.. the players Union wouldn’t let him AND HE JOINED THE YANKEES. So much has happened over the last 120 years. Nothing will ever compare
