The Duke Blue Devils were picked as the title favorites over North Carolina, Kentucky, and Kansas in FOX’s College Basketball title odds. Given everything the Blue Devils are losing – Paolo Banchero, AJ Griffin, Wendell Moore, Jr., Trevor Keels, and Mark Williams – plus a brand new and untested head coach in Jon Scheyer and this selection is indefensible.
North Carolina brings back four of their five starters (RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Armando Bacot) from a National Runner-Up team that knocked off those same Blue Devils two of the three times they played last season. Not to mention that Carolina’s first year head coach, Hubert Davis, guided his team all the way to the National Championship Game.
Host Isaac Schade also takes a look at the BetOnline ACC championship odds, which lists the Tar Heels at fifth in the conference. Why so much disrespect for the UNC Football team? Much of that is likely centered around the unknown personnel as well as a brand new defensive scheme.

Duke has been coddled by ESPN and other media for a long time now. It really has made them look pretty stupid considering what happened last season and actually Roy made Coach K nervous by winning more championships since he came to UNC. I guess you could say UNC gets used to the absurd coddling and tries to deal with the schedule in front of them.

There is so much I want to comment about from this video, but I'll try to keep it short. Bear with me.
The Duke Fanboy Syndrome is very real and alive in sports media. The fact that people still don't see that you must have experience to win a 'ship is mind boggling. In the OAD era (2006-present), only two teams have won a 'ship led by freshmen. However, those were not typical freshmen led teams. The 2013 UK team was led by an elite, transcendent, unicorn-like talent in Anthony Davis who was far and away the best player in the country. Then you have the 2015 Duke team. While not the most talented on the team, Quinn Cook was a senior and ended up being a phenomenal leader for that team. What Cook did for Duke in 2015 was similar to what David Noel did for UNC in 05-06. There have been other teams that sniffed a 'ship, but ended up falling short. The fact that they are also not considering that Scheyer has never coached before is even more telling of their DFS.
The second thing is that Hubert Davis most definitely should have been on the very short list for coach of the year. I didn't watch enough basketball this year to know if there were other coaches who did a better job by my metric, but I can't imagine any. My metric for COY is based on how much growth the team showed from the beginning to end. A coach who leads a team that is expected to make a deep run with loads of talent merely did what they were supposed to do. The fact that UNC was a bubble team at best and grew into being four points and several injuries away from a 'ship in HD's first year means HD did a phenomenal job.
While you caught me in the feels about the basketball projections. I agree with you about football. Before you said it, I guessed Clemson and Miami was one and two. Pitt surprised me, but NC State didn't. Until UNC shows they can win consistently and win the big games, I'm fine with them being 5th.
Okay, so I didn't keep it short. Let everyone keep sleeping on the Heels. That way they can continue to sneak up on people.

You are right about the recruiting wars. They want all the "One and Done" players instead of continuity from core character future NBA players that also provides continuity for the program.
