North Carolina At Chapel Hill

The Field of 68 recently released their top 25 returning college basketball players for the 2022-23 season. Three North Carolina Tar Heels made that list, including Armando Bacot (No. 3), RJ Davis (No. 13), and Caleb Love (No. 21). It’s no surprise that Bacot ranked that highly, however it might come as a surprise that RJ Davis was higher on the list than Caleb Love. It shows what the nation thinks about both parts of North Carolina’s starting backcourt and Davis’ importance to the Tar Heels’ success.

The other schools that have multiple players on Field of 68’s list are Baylor, Houston, Miami, and UCLA. In terms of conferences, the ACC has the most players with five, followed by the Big 10 and Big 12 with four each, the Pac 12 and AAC with three each, the SEC and Big East with two each, and the WCC and Summit League with one each.

In terms of the specific players, the top of the list is populated by prototypical big men who don’t fit in the modern NBA. Five are the top six players are Oscar Tshiebwe (Kentucky), Drew Timme (Gonzaga), Bacot, Hunter Dickinson (Michigan), and Trace Jackson-Davis (Indiana). In a fun twist, exactly one-fifth of the list is made up of diminutive guards, all 6’0″ or smaller: RJ Davis, Max Abmas (Oral Roberts), Kendric Davis (Memphis), Nijel Pack (Miami), and Tyger Campbell (UCLA).
