In a press conference last week, Coach Hubert Davis was asked about his plans for depth and rotation in the 2022-23 season. Would he go with a similar “Iron Five” approach with RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Armando Bacot, and (presumable) Pete Nance with a bit of Puff Johnson and Dontrez Styles sprinkled in? Or would he employ a deeper rotation including D’Marco Dunn, Justin McKoy, and the four incoming freshmen – Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Tyler Nickel, and Will Shaver?
In the same press conference, Coach Davis was asked what Armando Bacot could do (if anything) to continue getting better. Coach’s response? Consistency. Given Bacot’s NBA aspirations, Coach would also like to see him utilize his outside shot more.
2023 UNC commits GG Jackson and Simeon Wilcher have been pressing uncommitted player Matas Buzelis to join them in Chapel Hill. Last Friday, Buzelis announced his choice between UNC, Kentucky, Wake Forest, FSU, and the G League Ignite program. Buzelis opted to go the G League route. Why would a player do that in the NIL era? This years Team is going to be vastly different from last years squad. This years Team will be a lot better just due to the overall talent level. We lose Brady, Garcia, Kerwin and Anthony Harris. We add Pete Nance, Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Tyler Nickel and Will Shaver. That is a major upgrade of overall skilled and talented players. The different rotations that we can throw out at different teams should scare the opposing teams to death. I’ve said this before but Seth, RJ and Caleb are going to make each other much better just by practicing with and against each other everyday. RJ and Caleb need to become more consistent and efficient. We already have the best starting and overall backcourt in the country. Now If RJ and Caleb can improve just 5% of their overall efficiency on both ends of the floor than our Team is almost unbeatable. Of course there are so many different factors and variables when it comes into winning and losing a game. The scuttlebutt with Matas’s decision was that with his Family being foreign that they had no desire for him to go to college. Once again Matas could have drawn out his recruitment and at the last second just said oh I’m just going to go to the G League. We could have invested a lot more time and resources than we did. So at least there is that. So many kids love the limelight and fanfare when it comes to the recruiting process even though a lot of them already know where they want to go. So many recruits lost their spot on a team because another player jumps them and commits while they are enjoying the circus. That’s why Hubert Davis keeps hammering into everyone that he wants players that WANT to be Tar Heels. Coby White is a great example. Players that lost their spot examples are Thaddeus Young to Brandon Wright. Dillingham and Wilcher (however there was a lot more to it than just that), Seth Trimble and Bradley. I could go on and on. These kids deserve a chance to see other schools but some are just milking away the process while stringing along the schools. My fear is players like Jarin Stevenson and Cam Scott are going to be victims of getting jumped in their recruitment. Now in fairness they are 2024 recruits and it’s relatively pretty early. However the overall recruitment process is getting expedited much more quickly in todays era than it was just 5 years ago. These are big gambles that these kids are taking because instead of Thaddeus Young for example who knew all along that he wanted to be a Tar Heel he ends up at Georgia Tech. I think Buzelis' situation is different from the typical HS player due to his Euro roots. Over there the elite teenagers will often play in pro leagues, so I assume Matas and his family are more comfortable with the process of developing his game while playing a pro schedule than a typical US prospect might be.
Coach Davis sounded so much like Coach Smith when he was talking about the players determining the depth chart!
