The 2021-22 North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team ushered in a new era as brand new head coach Hubert Davis took over the reins from three-time national champion Roy Williams. Along with Davis, the second-leading three-point shooter in NBA history, came a higher reliance upon the three-point shot. His first UNC team was led from beyond the arc by Brady Manek (40.3%), RJ Davis (36.7%), and Caleb Love (36.0%). As a team, Carolina, shot 35.8% while attempting the most threes by a team in program history (916).
The Heels lose three of their top five three-point percentage shooters, including Manek, Kerwin Walton, and Dawson Garcia. Can Davis and Love build on what they accomplished last year? Can Pete Nance step in and once again shoot north of 40%? Will returners like Puff Johnson or D’Marco Dunn be able to find a more consistent shooting stroke? Will any of the freshmen contribute from beyond the arc?
The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team released their 2022-23 non-conference schedule late last week. The returning experienced core of RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Armando Bacot, plus the added depth of Puff Johnson and Dontrez Styles, along with the incoming freshmen and transfer Pete Nance will have a difficult set of games leading up to ACC play.
In Hubert Davis’ second season, UNC will play a total of 11 non-conference games (and one ACC game) leading up to the main chunk of ACC play. Carolina will play in four MTEs (multi-team events) – Phil Knight Invitational, ACC/Big 10 Challenge, CBS Sports Classic, and the new Jumpman Invitational. Additionally, the Tar Heels will have one exhibition game and five one-off games, all at home in the Smith Center.
While we don’t yet know the order or specific dates of the ACC schedule, we do know the 20 conference opponents and where those games will be played. The ACC has a three-year cycle in which the Heels have certain sets of teams they play away only, home only, and home and home, along with two primary rivals (Duke and NC State) who they play home and home every season.
