2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels Basketball Roster Preview: Puff Johnson

It’s the eighth week of the summer preview for the 2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball roster. We have finished the freshmen (Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Tyler Nickel, Will Shaver), the transfer (Pete Nance), the sophomores (D’Marco Dunn, Dontrez Styles) and we now move onto the juniors. We start with Puff Johnson, a 6’8″, 205-pound guard from Moon Township, PA.

If the surname and hometown sound familiar, it’s because Puff is the younger brother of Tar Heel alum and current Phoenix Sun, Cameron Johnson.

Puff Johnson is something of an anomaly, due to missing a combined 30 games to injury in his first two years in Chapel Hill.

Johnson won’t crack the starting five – that will go to Armando Bacot, Pete Nance, Leaky Black, Caleb Love, and RJ Davis. However, had Nance not transferred in, Johnson likely would have taken on the final starting spot alongside the remaining members of the Iron Five. The expectation is that Johnson, who clearly has earned the trust of head coach Hubert Davis, will be the first player off the Tar Heel bench.

Host Isaac Schade and Coach Pac Kilby take you through Johnson’s game as well as expectations for the upcoming season.

The Puff came on the last of the year look out 6th man of the year?

Matthew Grandpre' says:

If Puff can become consistent and reliable with the 3-pointer, then I would love to see him come in as the starter at the 4 for the 2023-2024 season. I know many UNC fans were dead set on seeing a top recruit like GG Jackson or a different elite freshman take over that starting spot next year. I hope Puff takes that starting spot instead and proves that with good experience and good coaching that he can play at the same level as a senior, and if not him, then Trez or Jalen or Tyler. A freshman recruit doesn’t need that starting 4 spot. The coaching staff should invest their time next summer in finding a center to replace Mando and Nance, maybe a reliable sophomore or junior from the transfer portal.

The Carolina Way for years has been to prove that our 3 and 4 star athletes can improve to the same level or better than elite freshmen. Let’s take Duke, for example, who have reloaded on multiple 5 star one and done freshmen every year and everyone, including themselves and the media, touts that as amazing. Over the last five years, we beat Duke twice in 2017-18, beat Duke twice in 2018-19, twice in 2020-2021 and twice last year. Each time, they had multiple top ten recruits and we had two top recruits over the last five years. Many players go to Duke to make millions in the NBA and many players go to Carolina for the longer coaching, longer improvement, and longer relationships. Carolina is more about the family than making the money.
