2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels Basketball Roster Preview: RJ Davis

It’s the ninth week of the summer preview for the 2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball roster. We have finished the freshmen (Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Tyler Nickel, Will Shaver), the transfer (Pete Nance), the sophomores (D’Marco Dunn, Dontrez Styles), and started the juniors with Puff Johnson. Sticking with the junior class, we set our sights on starting point guard RJ Davis, a 6’0″, 175-pound guard from White Plains, New York.

After Coach Hubert Davis provided more clear delineation in the roles for Davis and Caleb Love last year, with RJ permanently moving to point guard and Love to shooting guard, both players settled into a better groove. Davis wound up setting career highs in multiple statistical categories during the 2022 NCAA Tournament. His trajectory is pointed in the right direction to explode during his junior season.

With the addition of freshman guard Seth Trimble, Davis will hopefully be able to bring his minutes down from 34.0 per game into the high 20s or low 30s, allowing him to be even more efficient in the time he does play.

Host Isaac Schade and Coach Pac Kilby take you through Davis’ game as well as expectations for the upcoming season.

Chad Hickes says:

I had never seen RJ play in person until last year vs Georgia Tech. I was impressed by 2 players and that was RJ and Brady. Brady moving without the ball and just sliding into open areas really stood out as that is a lost art in CBB. Players taking charges is also going by the wayside. I wish Kenny Williams would lead a few practices and teach our players this extremely useful skill. However that has to be in a players DNA. The anticipation to recognize a plays development and to sacrifice your body is very instinct full. RJ’s quickness jumped out to me the most in person. As you stated RJ’s game and the overall play of the Team really took off when he was tasked with the lead PG roll. My biggest issue with RJ was dribbling too much and having tunnel vision at times. Once again to your point RJ’s game improved dramatically in the second half of the season. There was many times last year that I would have yanked RJ and especially Caleb (lol) during a game due to mistakes, bad decisions or lack of effort. But who would I have put in?? Even when Harris was available he was not a viable option in a very competitive game. Seth Trimble now answers that issue. However I do not see that as being an issue for next season with both players dramatic improvement in their overall maturity and their overall knowledge in what it takes for their Team to be successful and to win. But as the year went on RJ and Caleb were more comfortable in their rolls. As Coach Kilby alluded to I would love to see RJ’s and Caleb’s stats broken up into two parts. That would be very interesting to compare the two. With RJ I think that he goes into this season having built on his game from the second half of last season. If he increases his overall efficiency on both sides of the ball by just 5% then this Team will be playing on a whole other level. Just a fyi there seemed to be some audio difficulty with Coach Kilby. Wi-Fi at its best right 🙄lol. Not a complaint just an fyi but I’m sure you guys are aware of it. I thoroughly enjoy when the both of you get together and breakdown the subjects of your topics. By the way on another topic as I have stated before that I am a huge supporter and believer in Simeon Wilcher. He is one of only three players that I’ve anticipated coming to Chapel Hill more than the other new Family members. He had an unbelievable Peach Jam and won the MVP in pool play as well as finished on the first team. I’ve been singing his praises since last September and analyzing his highlights, whole games and interviews I started calling him “The Storm”. I think that it best fits this young man’s very unique, rare and remarkable overall game, skill set and personality. Thank you for all that you do! GDTBATH .
