It’s the 11th week of the 2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball roster summer preview series. We have gone through the freshmen (Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, Tyler Nickel, Will Shaver), the transfer (Pete Nance), the sophomores (D’Marco Dunn, Dontrez Styles), and the juniors (Puff Johnson, RJ Davis, Caleb Love).. We now move to the seniors and set our sights on Justin McKoy, a 6’8″, 220-pound forward from Raleigh, North Carolina.
The 2021-22 season was the first at North Carolina for Justin McKoy, who transferred in from Virginia after playing two years for Tony Bennett. McKoy was part of the first iteration of the NCAA’s brand new one-time transfer rule, allowing any student-athlete to transfer once and play immediately. He was part of a three-person transfer class for Hubert Davis in his first season as head coach of the Tar Heels, along with Brady Manek (Oklahoma) and Dawson Garcia (Marquette).
In his second season at Carolina, McKoy once again projects to play limited back-up minutes. He will certainly be behind the starting five of RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, Pete Nance, and Armando Bacot. As a 6’8” forward, McKoy will likely battle Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles, and Jalen Washington for minutes.
Last season for the Tar Heels, McKoy played in 30 games, averaging 7.0 minutes, 1.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.5 assists, while shooting 22.2% on field goals, 23.1% from three, and 80.0% from the free throw line. The shooting percentages are all skewed due to small sample size. McKoy had 36 total shot attempts, 13 three-point attempts, and 15 free throw attempts.
For better context, in his two years at Virginia, McKoy averaged 9.6 minutes, 2.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 0.3 assists, while shooting 46.5% from the floor, 33.3% from three, and 75.0% from the free throw line.
Host Isaac Schade and Coach Pac Kilby take you through McKoy’s game as well as expectations for the upcoming season.

Hello Isaac,
Where did you get the T-Shirt? I can't find it. Thanks
He should not get minutes sadly. I wish him the best but every minute he could get should go to young guys like D’Marco so they don’t transfer. He doesn’t have a future because he’s already a senior
I'm hoping the T stands for "The Real"
Great insight about Justin!!!
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s episode about Simeon Wilcher. I keep saying that this kid is phenomenal. Comes from a great and tight knit Family, Strong student, Great kid, great pedigree, very coachable, very strong work ethic, extremely athletic, plays with power, high BB IQ, strong fundamentals, he plays hard on both sides of the ball with passion and fire, he is fast and he is quick, makes players around him better and he is just an absolute winner. Even when GG was committed to us I was always way more excited about Simeon. A Storm is coming to Chapel Hill and I can’t wait. Simeon “The Storm” Wilcher. I call him that because that is what his game reminds me of in that like a storm he engulfs you with his power, causes chaos, produces high energy, is relentless and wreaks havoc. This young man will be a generational Tar Heel fan favorite for years to come. I’m looking forward to seeing both Simeon and Seth manning our backcourt next year. GDTBATH
You all aren’t going to do a Pete Nance episode? Guess you’ve discussed him a ton.
