REACTION: North Carolina holds off Boston College | Armando Bacot excellent | Pete Nance is back

The North Carolina Tar Heels picked up their fifth ACC win, and second straight, on Tuesday night, with a 72-64 victory over Boston College. Armando Bacot did what Armando Bacot does, scoring 20 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, and yet his team didn’t go to him enough. Just 11 shot attempts for the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, but it should have been more.

RJ Davis continues his hot shooting, going 4-7 from three. After shooting 26.2% in the first nine games of the season, he’s made 51.2% over the last seven and is now shooting 38.3% this season (a career high).

Leaky Black grabbed a career-high-tying four steals. Notably he now has multiple steals in six straight games and at least one in 10 straight games.

Carolina is back in action on Saturday when Armando Bacot has the opportunity to set a new UNC career double-double record (61) and break Tyler Hansbrough’s career rebounding record.

Jaxon Heath says:

It’s a weird situation for Terquavion Smith bc I go to the same school as he went to I support him but not state

James Pruett says:

Maybe he should take a page from the great ones game plan put 5 subs in for 5 minutes to give the starters a rest

Chad Hickes says:

Leaky and Nance do not bring any offense to the team. They will hit occasional 3’s here and there. It’s not a criticism it’s an observation. There is no firepower from them. We have to have Leaky on the court but not for 32 minutes or more every game. We are better without Nance playing starter minutes. He is very lethargic, mechanical and he makes freshman mistakes every single game. Hubert has destroyed the chemistry of this team so far this year. He has an extremely versatile and talented roster and he has not utilized it or developed it for this years Team. Pac makes a great point in why is Hubert not subbing more in the second half as well? For the love of God Hubert has to reign in Caleb’s inefficiency. He is a junior McDonald’s All American guard who is not getting better with his overall game. We are a veteran team and we had 8 assists on 26 made FG’s and 12 turnovers last night. Hubert has got to punish Caleb and sit him down when he gets out of control to refocus him and hopefully it reenergizes him as well. It gets those competitive juices flowing. I have said this after game one of this year in that we don’t have a true PG so we need our offense to be helped out by our defense. Press, traps, throw junk defenses at teams, zones these are things that we need to do to create turnovers that will result into fast break opportunities and points. But you can’t do that if you are tiring out your starters and not subbing players in. Shaver and McKoy are the last scholarship players that should ever see the floor. Shaver is gone for the year but McKoy played significant minutes for two straight games over Puff, Washington and Styles…..why??? You can tell that his internal clock to process plays is slow. There is no rhyme or reason that Tar Heel fans, alums and past players can see by what Hubert is doing. He is making and the team is making very simple plays difficult. I know a lot of high caliber former players that are just baffled by Hubert’s sub patterns, play calling and game management. At the beginning of the year for the first 9 games we experimented with an NBA style offense that put us behind the eight ball because it required our best player Armando to get be away from the block. It was horrible but they scrapped it. Last nights game proved once again that this team’s BB IQ is very low. Every single game we have so many unforced turnovers that result into break away layups for the other team. Regardless who we are playing. This was an issue last season. They need to watch the Women’s Team play and see what playing every possession with passion looks like. When they huddle during free throws they are engaged and focused. During timeouts they sprint to the bench. This men’s Team does not have that as of yet. But once again we will never get to where we want to be until Hubert starts utilizing his bench on a consistent basis, reigns in Caleb and stop playing Nance more than 20 to 25 minutes a game. Every time these kids walkout onto court it’s a job interview and as of right now they are not interviewing very well at all.

Jake Schwartz says:

Rj and Mando are our 2 key pieces. If we return both, which I think we will, we should be a top 5 team again coming into next season

Mary M says:

25:23 Wait. How did I miss that tweet?! Bacot could come back? Whoa boy.

Marcus Thomas says:

All this criticism of Caleb is not helping him. He had 16 points and we won the game. Instead of trashing him all the time we need to applaud him for the good things he does during the game. Maybe that will help his confidence and he will get out of his slump.

Brian Cash says:

I think we need to stop categorizing Caleb as being selfish, the young man has been called upon his entire career at unc to br that man. Keep shooting Caleb Love!!!

Wing Chu Meditation says:

To young to be tired I use to play 94 foot 7 days a week I never got tired

Wing Chu Meditation says:

Number 1 problem is play defense period end of conversation

Wing Chu Meditation says:

Bench depth is overrated come on guys dook beat butler in the national championship game 7 deep smh

Stay vigilant! says:

Happy to get the Qin but don't like it was only 8 pts at home to bc I had us winning by 12 least.. love did better I guess but he has to stop waiting so long to get hot and going. Idk what his deal is bit bacot and Davis are our only 2 consistent scorers as of now. I told yall soon as Nance was good Hubert would do that to the bench thts a problem he has. Another thing is the free throw line lately we need to get better from the line left alot of points there last night

John Bowser says:

You have finally found the problem!!!! Thank you for saying it. The starters have been taking off plays all year and that's why the team is inconsistent. These guys know that Hubert want take them out the game unless they have foul trouble so they take off to keep from fouling so they don't come out the game. They want become consistent until Hubert start taking them out for taking off

Tony Dowd says:

I'm over Caleb. We can't keep carrying him along "hoping" he's going to break out of his horrible shooting slump. Especially with his ill-advised shot selection. Trimble and Dunn are proving themselves over and over to be more productive and less of a liability than Caleb. He needs to figure out his shooting issues in practice, not during a game when it could be the difference between winning and losing.

Cris Howerton says:

I'd like to see specific plays for Caleb. Plays off of Armando ofcourse. Maybe he won't feel the need to just jack up a shot so often.

Meat Tooth says:

bacot will have the most RBs and Doubles in UNC's history this month and may not make it into the rafters. still needs either a AA position, ACC POY or FF MVP. he got screwed IMO for ACC POY in '22. he should be in the rafters regardless of meeting the requirements. harrison barnes is up there and did not accomplish near as much as bacot. meeks is another guy i was hoping would be in the rafters. he very well could have gotten the FF MVP but that went to Joel.

Meat Tooth says:

the heels have yet to blow out a team. we get these double figure leads and the other team does their best to allow heels to extend it into the 20s and 30s. when we are up 8 plus late in the 2nd unc allows the other team to cut the lead below 5. last night is was down to 1. when unc is clearly more talented, they end up winning. but against good teams, heels mostly lose. iowa st. is a prime example where we lead by 8 pt after the last TV timeout. isu gave heels every opportunity to win by over 20. vs. bama, heels were up in the last 4 minutes of regulation and each of the 4 overtimes. unc had a good excuse vs. VT and VA with no bacot and the latter without nance as well. pitt should have been a W. IU was the only game where unc did not compete at all. but the point is unc seems unable to kick their opponent while down.
