REACTION: UNC falls at Duke, 63-57 | Why can't Heels close? | More shots for Armando Bacot!

North Carolina fell to Duke on Saturday in the first game in the rivalry since UNC’s epic victory in last season’s Final Four. The Tar Heels had plenty of opportunities to win, and should have, but couldn’t make winning plays down the stretch. This has become a pattern in recent games – Carolina’s inability to execute down the stretch.

Any concern is the inability to get the ability to get enough touches for Armando Bacot, who was just third on the team in field goal attempts.

Leaky Black was Carolina’s x-factor in the game, securing his first career double-double.

The women’s team also fell this weekend, at Louisville, snapping their 8-game winning streak. It was going to be difficult already without Eva Hodgson, but when you factor in that Alyssa Ustby was also missing, the Tar Heels were in a tight spot.

Host Isaac Schade unpacks both games, providing his Four Corners recap and Schadey Stat of the Game from both contests.

Locked On Tar Heels says:

What does UNC need to do down the stretch of the season to get back on track?

Bass Fishing Lake Norman says:

Diehard true blue UNC fan for 5 decades here that agrees 100%… we have two consistent above average players. RJ and Armondo. That is it. Everyone else is average or they are sitting the bench and not seeing playing time. Last year they were playing great or the ball bouncing their way to get them to the final game. This year is not that team. The way they are playing now they better hope they make the 68… Caleb Love's NBA currency is falling like a rock. Anyone could throw up that garbage and hit his percentages. Hubert, let's try something else. You better rotate your bench or these guys are gone in the off season. I love my HEELS; but this is exhausting to watch.

The Nintenerd says:

It was just another frustrating loss. As bad as the refs were, they were just one of many factors that plagued the team on Saturday. If we get more points in transition we win. If we take better shots and not force bad ones we win. If we show more energy and drive we win. If we actually communicate on the floor then we win. It is a lot of little things that should be easy to fix, but they keep adding up and becoming bigger problems. No one is stepping up to be the leader that Brady was last season. I really do love these players and want to see them succeed, but for some reason they don't look like they want to succeed at times, which is weird considering how 4 of the 5 starters came back in order to get payback and win a national championship. If this loss isn't the one that pushes this team to improve and be motivated, then frankly, I just don't see it happening. I really hope I'm wrong.

Tovoris Moore says:

It's frustrating 2 grad students a senior and 2 Jr's 4 and 5 star players 3 McDonald's all Americans on the court yet we can't figure out a way to win these grind it out close games duke looked more poised than one of the most experienced national championship runner-up teams. We have a talented team but at times they act like they have never played a game with each other unc has lost so many winnable games this year they could easily be 20-1 right now ijs😢

dolphinzrwj1 says:

This team needs a true leader.

Logan Jackson says:

As an outsider, it looks to me from watching a bunch of games like UNC’s team doesn’t really like each other very much. Can’t put my finger on why I feel that way but just the way the teammates interact and their body language looks off sometimes. Not sure if that’s true or not but it explains the lack of communication and connected play, and what seems like low effort at times.

Lafayette Dickens says:

We saw poor decisions and bad execution in crunch time in both the Pitt game and the Duke game. Both games were winnable. I think we need a spark that we don’t have or haven’t found. Brady Manek provided that with timely threes that kick started the offense when nobody could hit a shot. Nance is not looking for his shot so it’s all on RJ Davis, Caleb Love and Armando Bacot who is being left on an island as he gets bracketed and guys are not making themselves available for the outlet pass. In the Pitt game on that last possession, Nance’s man left him after he passed the ball to Armando but instead of swinging around to the corner he ran away from that area to the opposite side of the key. This left Bacot without an outlet. Nance can shoot over anyone with his height but he turned down the shot and he didn’t come to the ball after his defender left him to double Armando leading to the traveling violation at the worst possible time. This is an example of how this team fails to make winning plays with the game on the line. Love had to come all the way over from the opposite side of the key to get to the same corner that Nance could have rotated to as soon as he passed the ball in to Bacot. Those few extra seconds could have been the difference in that game. At least we could have got a chance to put a shot up. And I don’t know why you allow Roach to get a layup right down the middle of the lane in that situation against Duke. That was the dagger that sealed the deal in that game. I’m not feeling good about how this is playing out. We are not playing winning basketball and it’s late in the season.

jeffrey Polly says:

Pete nance just isn’t the right fit for this team. Not saying he’s not a good player because he is. The only difference in this year’s team and last year’s team is Brady and Pete. We need to try other players at the 4 and try to get the magic we had last year. Pete just isn’t working and the team isn’t getting any better without making some major changes. Hubert doesn’t seem to make any changes when things aren’t working. He was forced into changing Garcia and Brady last year and needs a push to make changes in this year’s lineup

Ann Morrow says:

Good points, calmly stated. Thanks for trying to keep us level-headed, staving off panic

Brett Weeks says:

100 percent on the coaches you get paid millions to get the most out of your squad, for what I’m seeing your not trying to do anything your playing the same people every game little to none in game adjustments, use bench as an motivator and give other guys an chance Jesus do something smh

Josh Phillips says:

I miss the Roy era of uptempo fast break. We were so fun to watch. I always told the Roy Williams haters they would miss him when he was gone. This isn't Carolina basketball.

tarheelblue23198 says:

Man love your breakdowns you do a great job

Ronald chung says:

A lack of motivation

Squishy McSquisherson says:

Our biggest problem on this team, and it was same problem last year and the 3 years before that.

Carolina hasn't had a true PG (and by true in not necessarily talking old school pass first/pass only) in years.

We don't have that guy to run the break, feed the post and the shooters in their spots. The guy who can control tempo, run when we need to, get into sets when we have to. The guy who will take the ball BACK out and reset when the action stalls. We have had 2 guards masking as floor generals for half a decade.

And that won't change until Elliott is on campus.

Pete Calva says:

My comment on Carolina basketball is same Carolina no what who’s team play they bunch choker. Remember last year when they when tournament against Kansas Jayhawks in final, Carolina up by 16 point, and then by time second start they were flat and then they just quit they just don’t care. Just think about last year were had another banner. They should never rank them higher the beginning of season because they are not ready to be number one. Also if they want to get back,ACC conference race. Good luck with that. Go heels. Pete 007❤

Walter Scruggs says:

Blah blah blah you 3 players on this team are over 22years old there is no excuse for this team to be this bad

Rob M says:

It seems that the North Carolina aura has worn off. They used to be good for 10-15 points just by walking in the gym. I don't know if it is because talent is more spread out now or if it is due to recent UNC teams, but other teams are not scared of UNC anymore. This has been shifting over the last several years. With most teams in the past, it was almost a wrap if UNC team got up by double digits. Now, teams believe they can come back. It seems that this particular UNC team isn't scaring anyone.

As for the officiating, I'm not one to blame refs for losing a game, but one has to recognize the impact they had on the game. If refs are going to allow contact, UNC has to adjust. For whatever reason, our guys are not those dudes. Instead of taking the fight to the opponents and forcing the refs to call something, they start shying away from contact. The aggressive team does not settle for jump shots and fade away floaters. Unfortunately, just like the Pitt game, our roster is not suited for a physical matchup. There were moments, such as Love driving and trying to dunk on Filipowski and Lively (which I loved the aggressiveness), but overall they didn't match the physicality. There was a lot of contact that would normally be called fouls, but our guys were not tough enough to adjust.

Silas 4475 says:

The coaching staff on the bench every game does what? Why did Nance get 30 minutes when he couldn't make a basket. I guess his defensive pressure kept him in the game, lol. Leaky scored 13, but we have Tyler who could've double that with 30 minutes of playing time. Popularity over talent is f'in sickening, and HB better learn how to rotate players based off of performance not just defense every game. Same mess last year except Manik. Without Manic we would've never made it as far as we did last season.

Josh Narron says:

Really only one reason that teams get worse. From my POV this team is worse than the were at the end of last year. One word, complacency. If you're not moving forward then you're moving backwards.

HSJtrey23 Channel says:

Bacot should be getting 18-20 shots a game and Pete nance should be getting 10-12 post touches as well
