After a couple weeks of bad news for North Carolina with Justin McKoy, Tyler Nickel, and Dontrez Styles all entering the transfer portal, the Tar Heels and Hubert Davis finally got some good news on Wednesday. After more bad news in the morning with Puff Johnson also deciding to transfer, Armando Bacot announced that he was returning for his fifth year, taking advantage of his COVID eligibility.
We still wait on news from other UNC players such as RJ Davis and Caleb Love, who would each be returning for their senior years.
Following the Bacot and Johnson news, Carolina has four open scholarships to use ahead of the 2023-24 season. The Tar Heels will need shooting to balance out what Bacot brings inside.

We are in a new stage of college basketball. We must recruit explosive, talented shooting athletes who can play defense. Puff couldn't play solid defense without silly reaching fouls. Not an elite Carolina player.
The exodus of 3s is the players voting on Coach Davis with their feet. They know another transfer will come in & cozy up to Hubert during their nap time while not doing anything the guys who have given years of their life to UNC could not. The grass is always greener, even for coaches I guess.
I don't know why all the cryin about puff leaving??? He's never really done much to impress me outside of a few games. His knees are suspect at best. Just too many injuries. His shooting is very inconsistent. There are more "Brady Manek" types out there. Now we are free to go after them.

The roster looks good if anyone other than RJ can find a way to improve.
Puff leaving says to me he thinks Hubert ignores UNC players who have given their all for the program while treating mediocre transfers like the golden child, letting them have nappy time in his office. And Puff or his family probably don’t believe next year will be any different. This is a slow motion train wreck. I’m getting the sack cloth & ashes ready for next year.
How has not going to the NIT helped with the portal? Other than UNC players, there’s not too many people in there to look at & there likely won’t be until the tournament ends.
I think Hubert saw the players were going to transfer & quit on this season because Hubert didn’t think the players “wanted to be there” like he thinks they should. Meanwhile, he ignored players putting in good minutes over the years & rewarded poor play. Mando & Love basically have to take themselves out of the game to get a rest because the coach won’t.

Getting Bacot some help & keeping him to 20 minutes a game would go a long way to keeping him healthy if we can WORK our way into the tournament.
Remember when Garrison Brooks dominated as a big man? Sharpe was becoming who we thought he would be & Kessler was waiting in the wings. I wish someone would have told me those were the good ole’ days when it was happening.

Hubert Davis probably knew these guys were going to leave so he was like what the hell why am I going to play in the NIT when you guys are going to leave anyway let's get the ball rolling right now he knew those guys after the NIT it was a strong possibility those 4 guys were not going to be in chapel Hill next season so why play it's like you are wasting time
Puff was the only 1 that would move to the basket to help bacot. The other 4 starters would (stop) or (freeze) their movement way out on the perimeter as soon as bacot caught the ball !! At least Puff would run in and try to help. Oh well, not even that anymore.
I'm sure that Armando weighed his options and decided on the best one for him. I hope he stays healthy and has a banner year. We'll see if coach Davis rests him and gives Jalen Washington more minutes next season. We will see 4 to 5 guys leave routinely if this continues. That's a full third of the roster! All the talking heads are complaining about his low bench usage so recruits know that if they come to Chapel Hill they will only get spot minutes unless they can crack the starting lineup. If I were a talented recruit wanting playing time this would put UNC lower on my list.
I love his grit & love for UNC, but if we are being real, Mando staying doesn’t do much for next season. If anything we now know Hubert won’t even try to bring in a good big man or they won’t want to come.
I’m pretty sure the reason UNC’s football season tanked was because Phil Longo knew he was leaving & he gave up on the team. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Puff’s departure definitely raises flags about Hubert and the program. 4 wing players have transferred out and UNC has lots of holes to fill.
I thought Puff was suppose to be like his brother and be that big time shooter. Injuries set him back a lot. Good luck and hope he stays healthy.
Bacot needs a 15 foot jump shot. He would be unstoppable with that

Hope Bacot can learn to avoid sprained ankles and adds to his game for his last year. He needs a great backup which we missed this year
I guess we all know that NIL money for individual players cuts down on donations to the athletic department thus underfunding the 25 non revenue unc sports which are now at risk
This is the right decision for him. He has nowhere else to go. He's a very average college player and he's not going to have an NBA career. Might as well stay in college and make money from the NIL deal.
