North Carolina would benefit from another frontcourt player to help spell Armando Bacot, Jae’lyn Withers, Jalen Washington, and Zayden High. With two remaining scholarships, they certainly have the space to pick up another player or two. One such candidate could by North Dakota State transfer Grant Nelson, who entered the transfer portal on Tuesday after three years in Fargo. He has a unique skill set that pops off screen, but the question becomes: Would his style and usage rate mesh with the rest of the current Carolina roster? That will be up to Hubert Davis and the coaching staff to decide. Host Isaac Schade lays out the cases for and against bringing in Nelson, plus what a starting lineup might look like with him in it.
UNC will once again be playing the CBS Sports Classic in December and it was recently revealed that the event will be held in Atlanta and that the Heels will likely be playing Kentucky, rather than UCLA as initially imagined.

If Bacot makes it to the pros, how much have we cut his career short with all these injuries in college? Injuries that could likely be avoided by playing normal minutes for a big.
Nobody that big is built to sprint up & down a hard, wood, floor for 30 to 40 minutes at a time while dudes just hack at you & knock you to the floor.
If we committed to protecting Bacot by significantly limiting his minutes we could find a good back up for him. But the coach has some weird thing for Bacot & just can’t take him out of a game. I don’t know if this is a security blanket thing or what.
If we are trying to make a deep run in the tournament then we need to save Mando like they sometimes do their stars in the pros. No more than 30 minutes a game, especially early on.

UNC might be in a quandary with regard to a back up for 'Mando. Guys want to play and reserves under Davis are not likely to. Might want to give Jalen Washington more than spot minutes. It makes sense to use guys if you expend so much energy getting them into the program. I'm not convinced that we used Nance in a role commensurate with his skillset. It's water under the bridge now but I think Pete should have been urged to shoot more.
Do portal players scrimmage on visits? I think not. So not sure Nelson could develop a rapport with Armando during a visit.
