ACC schools are possibly looking to leave the conference, including North Carolina, Clemson, Miami

More news came out today that seven ACC member schools – UNC, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson, & Miami – are researching the ‘grant-of-rights’ deal with the ACC and how they can possibly get out of the media rights deal with the league to potentially join other conferences. Dennis Cox & Chris Lea discuss how North Carolina & NC State were listed as part of the “magnificent seven,” but that Duke was not. Dennis also wonders if fans actually care about any of this if games are still being played and that rivals schools are still facing eachother.

Tim Harris says:

As a Clemson fan I care very much about the conference because Clemson can’t compete if they are making $70 million a year less than Georgia and Alabama.

Tim Harris says:

Reports say that an 8th team, Louisville has joined the Magnificent 7, which is enough to dissolve the conference and thus the grant of rights.

Allen Saunders says:

Yes they do

BrushyMtnGolfer says:

Where is ESPN getting all of this money?

michael riggs says:

It will be the end of fandom for me. Super conferences suck.

N/A N/A says:

Nobody cares about basketball duke unc is worthless compared to football

David Floyd says:

The Big12 is going to love this

Dee Winn says:

The Grant of Rights only covers home games for each school. The rights to the away games belong to the conference of the hosting school. FSU could theoretically play the home half of their schedule at neutral sites(Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville) until the ACC Grant of Rights end in 2036 and would only have to pay an exit fee. The 7 schools are now trying to see if the ACC Grant rights can be broken early so they can have the rights to play their home games on campus before 2036.

Richard Yocum says:

Does Duke to the Big East and just dropping football make sense?

S Starling says:

Basketball is the red headed stepchild to football. Basketball will have little to nothing to do with the ACC staying together or splitting up.

sean fleming says:

So clearly, these guys don't know much. The guy on the left is the biggest joke and knows nothing about the topic. Fans of these ACC schools, specifically Clemson, FSU, Miami, and North Carolina, have been paying attention to this topic for several months. Here's the skinny they have 7 schools they only need 8 schools
(a majority) to dissolve the conference. If that happens, there is nothing the conference can do about it. So, the Sec and Big Ten will happily take some of these schools. So next time you want to discuss a topic, maybe do some research beforehand.

Roger Walker says:

College Basketball is not driving any of this realignment. Duke-Carolina basketball means little, to nothing, to the SEC and Big 10. The whole reason for conference realignment is because the teams that are good in football, and prop up this conference, feel they’re not getting properly compensated and are falling behind everyone else.

Mid-Florida Academy says:

FSU thinks highly of themselves

Morris Simmons says:

Football is driving this not Basketball

Alex Garcia says:

Any conference would want clemson an fsu

Shane Keena says:

Hoping FSU and Clemson go to the SEC and go on an absolute tear. Miami, Louisville, Pitt, and Virginia Tech make more sense at the Big 12 level, especially if Miami and Pitt each build a home stadium. Let those colleges cook in the Big 12 for a few years and use it as a transitional space to innovate and do some soul searching. UNC and UVA make total sense as Big 10 academic powers.

Praxton-de-Nouveau says:

Yeah, dude, the B1G and the SEC would want some of those ACC brands. Absolutely.

Elliott Crews says:

Everyone needs to learn to count to at least 8.

Joey Inman says:

Love the analysis fellas. Good stuff.
