Simeon Wilcher ASKS OUT OF NLI! | What does it mean for UNC? | Scholarship update | What's next?

The news broke on Tuesday that Simeon Wilcher has formally requested a release from his National Letter of Intent to play for North Carolina this upcoming basketball season. While the timing was surprising, the reality of this request is not all that shocking. With Elliot Cadeau’s addition to the 2023-24 lineup, the opportunity for Wilcher to get a high volume of reps as the main ball handler didn’t project to be in the cards.

Following Wilcher’s de-commitment, North Carolina currently has 10 scholarship players, with three available scholarship players. The backcourt quintet are RJ Davis, Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Cormac Ryan, and Paxson Wojcik. The other five are Armando Bacot, Jalen Washington, Harrison Ingram, Zayden High, and Jae’lyn Withers.

What’s next for the Heels? You take a deep breath and move on.

The Sports Fellowship says:

Y’all gotta understand…. Simeon is used to being the man. When Elliot committed he didn’t want to play less minutes. Simeon is not coming off the bench for Cadeau who he thinks he’s better than. He would have for Davis but not for Cadeua. Trust me Simeon is the man

Charles Diggs says:

Duke is not having these problems i can remember when unc had 5star on the bench waiting there time and they still went to the NBA times has changed

Stanley Daniel says:

Seth Trimble has to ball all the way out this year

MrCoolBeardGuy says:

Guess Simeon was trying to be One & Done

Brandon Wills says:

UNC has looked mediocre this offseason. We need a lot more staff. A GM might just be a start. Scouting department needs to be tripled to get ahead of transfers & reclassifications.

If the coaches were prepared for the EC reclass & not so single minded on guard transfers that would show they are on top of things, but they didn’t. Still no back up for Bacot. Didn’t get a true stretch four. Lost some beloved Tar Heels like Styles & Puff. Let Love get treated poorly before he transferred. And now losing a prized incoming freshman (2nd from the same class in two years).

On the plus side, UNC didn’t lose EC to reclassifying like they did GG last year. That’s improvement. UNC also got Ingram in the transfer which the fans really wanted. But that’s it.

And the coaches needed to miss the tournament to be prepared enough to do this?!? Kind of worrisome.

Powerswish says:

Better now than to waste his time and Carolina's time. Plus taking development minutes away from Trimble only to hypothetically transfer out when the 2024 class comes in and RJ returns for his bonus season. It's disappointing now, but somehow it doesn't seem like a slight to UNC, compared to when GG did it.

James Robinson says:

This era of college sports is not good for sports in general. The love of the sport and the love of the game is so watered down. I miss the old school way of growing with a team and being excited for an upcoming season. It's hard to keep up. 😢

Brandon Wills says:

We have 5 guards, 4 wing/forwards & 1 center, maybe 2. MANDO NEEDS A BACK UP! And we might want to have someone ready to play center in 24’.

jeffrey Polly says:

Hubert has another problem he’s going to have to address. He’s a great recruiter but it starting to look like HD is the only problem. He’s losing this program and I pray he can fix it but not looking good for the home team

Brandon Wills says:

This is best for Wilcher (and Trimble). UNC will miss him, but maybe he comes back in a year or two as a transfer.

jeffrey Polly says:

I understand the kid wanting to play and maybe realizing he isn’t. But the lack of a competitive personality and pretty much taking my ball and going home attitude is NOT what UNC needs. Do you think MJ would have ever given up on earning playing time without ever stepping on the court. Absolutely not. Elliot has the swag and KNOWS he’s going to get playing time through hard work and confidence. A TRUE UNC point guard and player we desperately need in our program

Brandon Wills says:

It was clear we got way too many guards. Wish we were ahead of the EC reclass so maybe we could have kept Wilcher & not focused on guard transfers.

We didn’t lose EC like we did GG, but still had the wrong transfer strategy two years in a row due to reclassifying freshmen.

Tony Dowd says:

You gotta hate it anytime you lose a 4 🌟, but kid's these have no patience these day's. Everything has to be right now. So unfortunate.
I really liked Dunn's progress and thought he was going to be a Tarheel standout his senior year. I know it's a stretch, but would love to see him return. Hubert is use to working with a short bench, so this is easier for him even if nothing changes. I believe Paxson Wojick will have a larger impact than most people think. He's a talented mature player who hustles his butt off. Great show Issac.

Go HEELS

James Pruett says:

I'm looking for all the high school basketball players not to commit til after the transfer portal close,Roy saw this stuff coming

Gregory Lunsford says:

I hate Wilcher is leaving I do understand it, I think it open door for Stevenson to. Come now he will more than likely reclassified be here next year as far as guard play it's fine belive our backcourt set

Katherine Broderick says:

I hear you…I miss that era too. I am old enough to remember that Dean Smith had a Blue Team… guys who didn't start but came in as a unit to give the starters a rest and to provide a boost. sigh…..but we've got what we've got and GO HEELS

dsteele2332 says:

I can't lie I was shocked..Tremble is the only guy I thought was going to back out possibly…at this point, looking for a guard is the last thing I saw coming

laxkz says:

Simeon wok her is not a 1 and done player wheter he come to UNC or somewhere else.If he lucky to ever play in the NBA he gone need 3 to 4 years period

Kelly Meade says:

I think he realizes Elliot is going to be a force …and he’s wanting the quick route to the NBA! If he doesn’t want to be part of the team, that is his prerogative, and I wish him the best!

Jeff Ruben says:

MOVING ON:

Wishing SW much success on his quest.

I believe the guard rotation is more than fine.

Ideally Stevenson re-classes and sign another big – Kuluma would be perfect along with Stevenson – UNC is a 25 win ball club

GO UNC
