Could RJ Davis & Armando Bacot be 20-point scorers in '23-24? | Davis contend for ACC scoring title?

Armando Bacot and RJ Davis project to be North Carolina’s two main leading scorers next season. A question from a listener ponders if the two could each be 20-point-plus scorers next season. Given the likelihood of North Carolina’s balanced scoring with Bacot, Davis, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, Elliot Cadeau, and others, Isaac Schade and Pac Kilby both take the under.

Another listener question asks if RJ Davis might contend for the ACC scoring title next season? It’s certainly a possibility as only three of the ACC’s top 10 scorers (including RJ Davis) will be back in the conference next season. Only two – Davis and Syracuse’s Judah Mintz – will play for their same team (Syracuse transfer Joe Girard was a top-10 scorer but is transferring to Clemson).

The final question is about Jarin Stevenson and whether it would be better to stay in high school and continue developing for his senior year or re-classify and come early to UNC.

To Pac's point. You also can't be a McDonald's All-American if you reclassify and forgo your senior year of HS. Maybe that doesn't mean as much anymore, but it's one of those things stamped on your history that you can look back on years from now.

Charles Bryan says:

Old Joke:

Q: Who was the only man to hold Michael Jordan under 20 pts per game?
A: Dean Smith

Given the fact that there most college teams average 50-60 possessions per game, players would have shoot a near perfect percentage to get 20 every game. FTs would obviously impact the average. 3-point shooting impacts the number as well but UNC has never seemed to emphasize the 3-pt game like, say, dook does. A guy would still have to be an incredible 3-pt shooter to get to 20 game in and game out.

The team would have to have an extraordinary amount of steals or be monsters with rebounding to generate more possessions which create more shot opportunities.

From a pure numbers perspective, it doesn't seem likely.

Don't really need 20-point-per-game scorers. We just need to play the "Carolina Way" (passing, screening, cutting) and rebound. If the team accomplishes this, it wins 25 games per year. If not, you get a repeat of the 22-23 season.

l Sunset D5 l says:

They could but I think we have to many guys that can play for the numbers to be that high

Jesse McCord says:

I think Davis has a decent chance to average 20, but unless Bacot starts living at the FT line ala Tyler Hansbrough and hitting at a 75+% clip, I think he'll wind up somewhere in the same 15-17 ppg range he's been the past 2 years.

On a second note I love everything Tarheel. Been watching THI podcasts for awhile now. Andrew jones is hard to watch. He’s constantly interrupting his fellow journalists and just seems like a rearend. Issac and everyone goes together seemlessly and such a pleasure to watch. And as always it a GDTBATH. Peaceeeeee

jeffrey Polly says:

Doubt it very seriously but hoping for all 5 over 20. Lol

Tony Dowd says:

If our shooting percentage goes up, then naturally our rebounding opportunities numbers come down, with both RJ and Mondo being strong rebounders, put back scoring goes down. That is a small but substantial number. Hopefully Mondos shooting % goes up, as does the entire team with love gone. Our entire roster was recruited for their shooting potential, so I look for collectively more ppg. 90 average ppg, especially with Elliott leading the fast break. With our bench, Carolina will be a fast break team….😮
No need for a slower pace game this year to save guy's from exhaustion.
Go HEELS

Lafayette Dickens says:

I think if EC only averages 8-12 points a game it is not likely that he will be one and done. He will make sure other guys get theirs but he also has to get his if he's trying to go league in one. Shot distribution will determine if RJ and Armando both will average 20 ppg. They are both capable for sure.

dsteele2332 says:

I honestly don't care about the avg of the starters…this year that damn bench better avg minutes and points lol

Kevin Butler says:

They probably could, but they really don't have to. There will be more balance and scoring options on this team. Not comparing, but that 2012 team with Barnes, Henson, Zeller, Dexter and even Bullock all were capable of scoring. And that was because of the distribution of Marshall. If Cadeau is anywhere close in that in terms of facilitating, everyone will eat and nobody will be worried about averaging 20+.

Brandon Wills says:

In my opinion Jarin would do best staying in HS & see what Hubert does at the 4 & see what that says about next year. Also probably not good to let the UNC coaches make up their mind about you too early unless you are playing.

Brandon Wills says:

If RJ & Bacot don’t average over 20 pts then it’s probably another year of losing games with 50 or 60 pts a game. EC & Ingram are not scoring threats. Cormac is not proven at this level & Hubert has not shown an ability to use the bench, much less get 10+ pts from them regularly.

chill says:

Probably not. Too much firepower.

Brandon Wills says:

Tar Heels will probably need RJ to average 25 pts & Bacot 20+. EC will probably be 5 pts, Cormac maybe 15, Ingram 10 & 5 from the bench. That’s still averaging below 80 pts a game with RJ & Bacot at 20 pts each.

Tomas Johnson says:

They could, they should, they may not 🤷‍♂️
