Saint Augustine's Falcons vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Exhibition Reaction

The Saint Augustine’s Falcons visited Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in an exhibition game prior to the beginning of the regular season!

R.J. Davis came out on fire and had 17 points in the first 7 minutes of the basketball game. Davis finished the game 5-10 from beyond the ark to include leading all scorers with 22 points as the North Carolina Tar Heels drubbed the visiting Falcons 117-53.

The much anticipated debut of Elliott Cadeau had Carolina fans gawking at the future as he showed his potential finishing with 7 points and three assists. While Cadeau showed glimpses of Ed Cota throughout the night as a facilitator, he brought the crowd to its feet when he dribbled hard to the lane and threw down a monster dunk with the defender on his hip.

The Heels ability to knock down the 3-ball after finishing dead last in the ACC last year in 3-point percentage was a huge positive.

We’ll talk about all that in more in this one!

This is promising for sure. They got back to Carolina Basketball just like when Coach Smith coached us. Playing our 22 defense, pushing the ball up the court, getting the ball out of the net on their made baskets fast and inbounding it quickly so we could start our break, the use of the secondary break at times. Coach Smith always had our mantra in play hard, play smart and play together. There of course is a lot to clean up however the main thing is that we got back to basics and for the first time Hubert was coaching that way. I was concerned when Cormac got hurt at the end of the first half but it looks like it was a minor ankle sprain. I wish they would have shown us on tv how the injury occurred though. The team you could tell were genuinely playing for a Team goal and watching them support one another was invigorating to say the least. Bacot had a quiet double double but he still concerns me with turnovers and his awkward play at times. Paxson started but this won’t last too long as Cadeau is as advertised. Cadeau has to watch his fouling and this has been the main issue with him all summer long. He picked up his fourth foul very early in the second half. He needs to start learning how to draw charges and that is something that I noticed that no Tar Heel tried to do either. This needs to be rectified. Washington had some good plays but he has to improve on his strength and quickness. If this Team can lock in defensively the sky is the limit for them this season. RJ had 17 points in the first 5:45 of the game. The team came out in the beginning of the second half kind of lethargic and I loved seeing Bacot huddle them up in a dead ball situation (another thing Coach Smith invented) and got in the teams faces to try and refocus and fire them up again. I never saw that at all from Bacot in his first four years in Chapel Hill and for him to do that in an exhibition game was also encouraging. People forget as bad as our team was last year that of our 13 losses 9 of them were within 1-3 possessions. Our overall efficiency on both sides of the ball is going to go up dramatically for this team going forward. We outscored them 25-0 on fast break points. Of course this was against a mid Division two team but you can see that we have the players who have the BB IQ, want and willingness and athletes to execute this going forward no matter who we play. We had 23 assists and some of them were just very basic plays that in last years team never would have done. We didn’t see RJ pounding the ball, dribbling and dribbling trying to get a shot off with someone draped all over him. To me there were two plays of the game in which both were in the first half and it involved both EC and RJ. The first one was where EC dribbled the ball to the weak side and RJ just rotated over and EC passed the ball to RJ for a wide open three pointer in which EC helped free him up by after his pass he screened off the defender so RJ could get the wide open look. A very basic play but once again not once did anyone do that last year. The second play was a semi fast break and EC saw RJ move to the open spot in the defense and EC gave him a cross court pass once again for a wide open three pointer. These two plays gives me much hope for this season as did this whole game. Guys moved without the ball and with a purpose, the defense was sound and we didn’t hedge screens as we fought through them. Not to mention both Withers and Trimble did not play due to minor injuries. Ingram was everywhere and he did everything. Ingram has that JR Reid physique, Lol. He is wide and agile. Great start in an exhibition game in which I think it can be very special season for the Tar Heels. GDTBATH
