Who should be UNC's starting 5? | 3 areas of concern for Tar Heels | Regular season finale woes

North Carolina finished Battle 4 Atlantis in third place after knocking off Northern Iowa, then losing to Villanova, and finally beating Arkansas. It was a good showing from Carolina, with nice redemption from last year’s MTE – PK85. One of the big takeaways from Battle 4 Atlantis is wondering who is the best combination for the starting five. Host Isaac Schade suggests six players are currently deserving of being included. The no-brainers are RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, and Harrison Ingram. Cormac Ryan would be the next-most-obvious. That leaves either Elliot Cadeau or Jae’lyn Withers. Who does Isaac think would be best?

There are some areas of concern coming out of Atlantis – unwillingness or incapability to change defensive plans when you’re getting hammered by a certain offensive style, team-wide free throw percentage, and Carolina’s foul issues.

The regular season finale loss to NC State was sad, but was it indicative of bigger issues at play?

John Bowser says:

I disagree with most we are better with RJ, Trimble, Carmac, Harrison and Bacote. This is the better defensive team. You have great scoring with this team also. Seth is a better scorer than we know he just need to be more aggressive. Thats a five that could aĺl avg double figures. Once Cadeau get his defense down you can change him and Trimble

Meghan McNeill says:

RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, Harrison Ingram, Elliot Cadeau, and Cormac Ryan/Jaelyn Withers

Dale Christianer says:

I'm concerned about Bacot. No free throws? He misses so many point blank shots, and was an offensive liability in Atlantis. He can rebound but he's weak offensively. So much for 'preseason all-american'

Mose Woodberry says:

Mack Brown needs to go also..

Mr. Bill says:

Washington is our secret sauce, I'm concerned if Coach Davis agrees with that…..

The Nintenerd says:

I absolutely love how Cadeau's game complements RJ's game. It's no coincidence that RJ's best game of the season so far is the one where Cadeau also started. Cadeau's fast paced play and passing allowed RJ to take advantage of how quick he is and it made for some easy transition baskets. Whether he comes off the bench ofr eventually starts, Cadeau needs a lot of minutes, even with RJ in the game.

Will Allison says:

I absolutely agree that it's time to move on from Chizik 100%. As mentioned in the Discord the other day, might need to look at some changes with our strength and conditioning staff as well. Idk the answers but something has to change

Jeffrey Brown says:

Your areas of concern are all things that can be fixed. It's still early so they have time to get better.

jim ROBINSON says:

Line up doesn't matter. Matchups do

BIGG KUSH says:

The football team need to do something bring some one who will inspire the team with some enthusiasm

BIGG KUSH says:

BIGG KUSH EVERYDAYER CHECKING IN Seth rj cr jwit and BACOT

Dionell Walker says:

Its not who starts its who finishes. Washington has to be questioning his decision to return back to Chapel Hill because he's being held back by Mando's return for his 5th season. Hopefully Cormac will be healthy Wednesday for the Tennessee game because I wondered how good his outside shot was, well he quited any reservations I may have had

400 Bones says:

Also, ill be the one to say it, there are times where seeing Bacot with the ball or on the court is as disappointing as watching Caleb Love with the ball was, the no short jumper in five years of college ball… The million missed bunnies, which in fairness pads his rebound numbers… And the fading on shots instead of going strong always, i dont get it, cause he really looks to have strengthened his free throw shooting so the points are there if he just goes strong…. But he looks soft more often than not, and then he looks bored out there not synced with the team or like he has any injuries with the guys, you see Ryan get taken out and he just looks away and walks off lol.

Justsomedude says:

Well we’ve already seen a defensive liability when RJ and Elliot are in at the same time, smart teams are attacking that. Several times Hubert quickly went to either Seth or Paxon when a strong 2 was abusing Elliot (& Elliot still fouled out of 2 games). So I don’t like Elliot starting either because we need some size at the 2 spot defensively.

(And yes…the Villanova loss was a “Hubert” loss)

400 Bones says:

Not totally related but Harrison Ingram, is literally my favorite player on this team. RJ is great too. But Ingram just brings some kind of energy him and Ryan both just have that fire, that has desperately been missing at Carolina.

dsteele2332 says:

I really think I can dig Rj, Ryan, Ingram, Withers and Bacot..vs most teams I think the size of that line up is perfect

spoonbender123 says:

The five for sure's…Cadeau, RJ Davis, Ingram, Bacot, the fifth full time starter is a question mark. But with that said, I'd play Ryan first because he can be dangerous inside and out as he can hit the three and he can play well inside rebounding and blocking out. Ingram allowed us the best opportunity to win against Arkansas. He's amazing at muscling his way to the basket, drawing more than one player to guard him, leaving others open like Seth and the amazing passes from Ingram to Seth Trimble where he swiched the three's from the corner.

Colin Rheem says:

Davis, Trimble, Ingram, Withers, Bacot.

Mel Abbott says:

As someone who watched you a ton last season… the hair throwing me off. 😅

Johnathan Brooks says:

It took 40 free throws for Villanova to beat us tbh

Noel Hayes says:

My personal preference to start: RJ, Cormac, Harrison, JWit, & Armando

Adereio Jones says:

We need to work on a better game winning shot moving forward. That shot with 3 seconds to go against Villanova was terrible or the execution was bad. Either or…

Jeff Ruben says:

J- Wit should be the starter – He makes the lineup bigger and more athletic and makes it easier for Bacot.

If he gets going offensively along with Ingram UNC will be a force come March

Michael says:

At the end of tight games we need our best shooters in . Especially Ft shooting and lineups depends on our opponent and their size.

MICHAEL HOLBROOK says:

Carolina is so talented and deep this year. Picking a consistent starting five is nearly impossible. But just going off what I have seen so far I would say, Cadeau, Ryan, Bacot, Ingram, and Davis should start, but I worry that the frontline might be too small for March Madness. Might have to go Ryan, Washington, Bacot, Ingram, Davis as the starting team. Then bring in your second group of starters, Cadeau, Withers, High, Wojcik, and Tremble. Use Okowko and the remaining group of talented stars as role players.

Alex says:

I would go with cadeu, rj, Ingram, withers, bacot… Cormac is a "pro" as it were and can handle coming off the bench, being a sparkplug..plus he'd be great checking in with Washington and Trimble and leading that bunch off the bench

Tony Dowd says:

UNC is deep into the bench. I believe our starting 5 will be determined by our competition on that particular night.

Kevin Butler says:

I was never worried about EC; it was just gonna take some time. Now to convert on the free throws because he will draw fouls. Even Wojcik shows some flashes. This team is gradually growing on me. I love #55!!!

Kevin Butler says:

Now I am waiting on Withers and Washington to get their offensive games going. We have seen spurts; its time to bring it out. Ryan get that ankle healthy and I believe Ingram is a grown man! We known about RJ….the big question mark is Mr.Bacot.
