There are lots of big guys that have great footwork and a soft touch…To me DJs biggest strength, and what makes him a unicorn, is that he has the vision and passing ability of a guard. You can't double team him because he will always find the open person. It's an almost impossible match up one on one, but it's also not beneficial to double team him either because of his passing ability. You saw that at play in the Virginia and UNC game…neither of those teams were double teaming him when he was down low. Not because they didn't want to, but because they correctly realized that he would make their lives even more miserable with his passing ability if they double teamed. Either let him score two off the 1v1 matchup, or double team him and let him find a wide open guard beyond the arc to sink a three. It's an impossible coaching decision, one where you have to choose the lesser of two evils. In a way, the fact that he wasn't double teamed shows just how much those teams respected his passing threat.

Honestly as a lifelong NC State fan (really started watching in the late 90s), DJ Burns has become my favorite player I’ve ever gotten to see wear the Red and White. I’m so excited that more basketball fans are going to get to see him in action. He is proof that athletes really do come in all sizes. In the Championship game he played 28 minutes which is way more than usual and he obviously played really well even with those extra minutes in his 5th game in 5 days. If you really watch him, he doesn’t trot down the court when it’s time to defend. He really works to help on defense as best as he can. He’s not a great defender because he’s slower than most players, but he has made great strides this year to be more consistent defensively so that his teammates can know what to expect and how to help.

He is also completely unfiltered and unafraid to speak his mind; right after winning the championship his message to the fans was “to those who stayed with us, thank you. And to those who are here now, welcome back!” 😂 which honestly was a surprisingly measured way to call out some of the mean stuff directed mainly towards him and Coach Keatts when things weren’t going well. He also had the best quote of the tournament after battling through a very physical Virginia team without getting much help from officiating. He said, “I told myself ‘you can either get in your feelings, or you can go win this game.”

After all the hate he’s dealt with, this is a guy who has earned the respect he’s getting now. Thanks for this content! Go Pack!

Favorite player in college by a mile. Unguardable. The footwork on a man that size is unbelievable.

@ajpilot22 says:

I love DJ and he is definitely one of my favorite state players ever but there is no way he is just 300 lbs lmao

@GregorsOutdoors says:

Out of all the teams that UNC could have seen in the ACC finale, I think they probably weren't exactly relieved to see the Pack. It's hard to beat a team 3 times much less one that is like a wounded animal in a corner. A team that has nothing to lose is a very dangerous team to play. This is the team Tex Tech has to face. It will not be pretty.

@AlamoMatador says:

Middle of the road Big 12 team? You mean tied for third in the Big 12 regular season and tournament despite numerous injuries? Only behind the consensus #1 overall UH team and a strong and healthier ISU?

Also, the DJ's "clearly had better years than Pop and Joe"? Because they averaged one point and .3 points more a game? You clearly aren't familiar with Pop's game and Joe is not one of Tech's two best players. Even then, they both accounted for more points per game than the two wolfpack players when you account for assists.

@Harrison244 says:

If state beats TTU in rd 1 it’d set up a lil bit of a revenge game with dillingham… he was a ncsu decommitt late in the recruiting cycle

@Harrison244 says:

State fan- that’s our boy big30! Silky smooth footwork and touch and can pass at a very high level. Total liability on D tho

@brandonelkin3166 says:

He's not 300+ he's 280

@jamesgribble4415 says:

Basketball is a push and shove sport today. A few years ago, he would have fouled out for pushing defenders around to get in position for an easy shot. Defenders are shed with shoves then called for fouling. I don't care too much for the game today after watching two top teams play for almost four minutes with only 2 points scored. Is it poor shooting or poor coaching or both?

@BD-wz8cd says:

UNC fan here. I've been watching DJ Burns for years now and am not ashamed to say he's my favorite player in college ball. Every game I watch with friends or out in public people are always talking about his weight and I love watching their jaws drop and getting to say "I told you so" when he takes over games. There is no way a guy that big should be that agile on his feet, move like a ballerina, and dish the ball like a guard.

@colbytaylor4813 says:

Nice way to click bait knowing damn well he's only 275🙃

@jefferythompsonGRYTman says:

did you know Dillingham is a NC native and originally committed to NC State but later decommitted to choose UK?
