ESTERO, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball upset No. 18 North Carolina 65-64 Sunday in the Gulf Coast Showcase third-place game at Hertz Arena.
“I thought our team responded to a tough situation,” head coach Karl Smesko said. “I think it really helped that we got off to a good start. In the second quarter, we had a lot of foul trouble that threw us off our rhythm a little bit. It went back and forth in the second half, and we were just fortunate to make the last basket.”

North Carolina played Arkansas on Friday, its first ranked opponent of the season. Following the release of Monday’s AP Poll, four of the Tar Heels’ next five games will also be against ranked opponents (assuming they all stay ranked by the time Carolina plays them) – Tennessee, UConn, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. The lone non-ranked team is the only conference opponent in the stretch – Florida State. The way in which Armando Bacot, RJ Davis, Harrison Ingram, and the rest of the Tar Heels navigate this stretch will go a long way toward determining the shape of their resume.
