UNC Tar Heels vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs for Preseason #1 | Crossover with Locked On Zags' Andy Patton

The North Carolina Tar Heels and Gonzaga Bulldogs are both stacked heading into the 2022-23 season. Just about every preseason top-25 list has the two teams 1-2 in some order. For UNC, Hubert Davis brings back four of his five starters (RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, and Armando Bacot), while losing an integral piece in Brady Manek. Additionally, Carolina has just landed Northwestern transfer Pete Nance, who should slot into the staring lineup in Manek’s spot. The Tar Heels have some other strong returning players in Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles, D’Marco Dunn and bring in a four-person freshman class of Tyler Nickel, Will Shaver, Seth Trimble, and Jalen Washington.

Mark Few loses Chet Holmgren and Andrew Nembhard, but got just about everything else back. Drew Timme, Rasir Bolton, and Julian Strawther all pulled out of the NBA draft and will return to Spokane. The Bulldogs also return key reserves in Anton Watson, Nolan Hickman, and Hunter Sallis. They also bring in transfers Efton Reid (LSU) and Malachi Smith (Chattanooga).

The NCAA Tournament is vicious and unkind even to the best teams. There are no guarantees. But on paper, we could have a re-match of the 2017 National Championship Game in 2023.

Northwestern transfer Pete Nance has committed to North Carolina for the 2022-23 season, completing the Tar Heels’ roster. He announced his decision via his Twitter / Instagram on Saturday, June 18.

Nance should slot into the Carolina lineup as the starting ‘4’ alongside RJ Davis, Caleb Love, Leaky Black, and Armando Bacot. He will also provide great backup minutes for Bacot at the ‘5’ when the presumptive ACC Preseason Player of the Year heads to the bench.

Last season at Northwestern, Nance averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks, while shooting 45.2% from three. For his career, Nance started 74 games at Northwestern and has just one year of eligibility left, using his COVID year.

Chad Hickes says:

I’ve always been a huge fan of Gonzaga. I always said that there is one Team I’ve never wanted the Tar Heels to face in the tournament and that is Gonzaga. I’ve said this well before we played them in the tournament in 09. I hope Gonzaga eventually wins a title as long as it’s not going through the Tar Heels. Mark Few is one of the very best coaches in the game

Chad Hickes says:

I do not think that Tar Heel Nation is oblivious to the fact of what we lost in Brady Manek. Our Team for this upcoming season is going to be drastically different than last years squad. Our Team will be a lot better this year than last year. On paper we are the best Team in the country but as we all know you have to practice and play like you are playing in the last game of your life. Every time these kids are on the court they are on a job interview. Millions of eyes will be on them at all times. Coach Davis has already instructed the Team to block out all the noise for this year too. The kids need to adhere to this advice more than ever. There were a lot of huge plays for our Tar Heels last year in the NCAA Tournament but there is one that continuously stands out to me and that was vs ucla in the sweet 16. We were down 3 points with one minute and change left to go in the game. Bacot was having back spasms and he was not moving at his regular pace. Caleb misses a three and the ball is going out of bounds and Bacot races to get it and throws it back inbounds to the top of the key. Caleb gets it and fires another 3 and ties the game. That play was absolutely crucial to our tournament run. Once again there are so many plays that we can point to but this one has always stood out to me. On another topic Gary Parrish has always been an idiot. He has always come across to me that his opinions are border line facts. He is arrogant in his opinions. I’m not a big fan of Jeff Goodman but he is fair which I respect.

Joseph Conner says:

Dude doesn’t even know how to pronounce Manek

Jake Schwartz says:

This isn't even a comparison. Look at there predicted starting lineup and we're better at literally every position except Timme and Mando are equal. Our starters all for this year started last year and I think they had two starters from last year returning.

Monroe says:

Can’t lie you’re right Gonzaga did change once they got Zach Collins but they still haven’t won anything yet. There latest teams have been there best teams but at the end of the day they can’t get it done.

Monroe says:

Bruh please never in your life call Gonzaga a blue blood. They literally lost the only 2 championships they have ever played in one of which they got blown out.

Dave Gill says:

Timme has the offensive advantage?! Laughable. Offense is more than just points. Double double machine.

Rodney Sessoms says:

Let 'em play during the regular season to determine who's top dog. Should be a great matchup

Evan Pate says:

Too much Gonzaga talk. No offense but we don’t care about Gonzaga

ravon Gore says:

I feel like I just watched the zag show and tar heels cheered them on and I don't like that dagum crap
