Hubert Davis and North Carolina secured their first commitment in the class of 2024 on Thursday when in-state strong forward Drake Powell announced his decision to come to Chapel Hill for college.
Powell is a 6-5, 170 junior who plays for Northwood High School in Pittsboro, NC. He’s currently ranked 58th nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite but is a prime candidate to jump up the rankings as things continue to unfold.
The Tar Heels currently just have one commitment (Simeon Wilcher) in the class of 2023 and only one other outstanding offer (Zayden High), but have eight offers out in the class of 2024, plus Howell’s commitment.
Two of the other offers are to two other high-level in-state players in Trentyn Flowers and Jarin Stevenson. Will either, or both, of those young men follow Powell’s lead?

Powell is extremely raw. He has two more years of high school and that gives him plenty of time to enhance his overall skill set. Drake is an extremely high character young man. He is Jackie Manuel 2.0. His parents are Tar Heel alums and this was expected. Jarin Stevenson I hope pops soon too. His parents are Tar Heels as well. Very unusual how our offers are mostly back court positions. Fland, Johnson, Jackson, Scott, Cadeau and Flower’s all have offers and play in the back court. All six of them are 5 star players. The only other offers that are out in that class is to Jarin Stevenson a 5 star PF and James Brown a 4 star Center. It’s peculiar because for next season we bring in Simeon Wilcher who is an absolute stud and a 5 star PG. No one is a bigger fan of this kids game more than I am. He is a beast! So our back court for next season probably will be Wilcher, Trimble, Dunn and probably RJ. Caleb probably will be gone by then but you never know. But to me as good as Simeon is I don’t think he will be a one and done. He and his family are very smart and I don’t think they are going to rush him to the NBA. They know it’s not how fast you get to the league but how long you stay in the league. The same goes for Trimble. I don’t see him playing just one or two seasons. I think he plays at least 3. We will be losing Leaky and Nance for sure for next season. Probably Caleb too. But I have gone on record and said that I think that Bacot will play his Super Senior Season. No matter if they win the title next season or not. Unless of course he is guaranteed to be a first round pick. It will be very interesting to see how everything shakes out.
