Hubert Davis was named the 20th head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels’ men’s basketball program on April 5th, 2021, and saw immediate success leading the Tar Heels to the 2022 National Championship game. But, before his time on the bench of Carolina he was a standout player for UNC. Davis was recruited by Dean Smith and Roy Williams and had a huge impact on the success of the basketball team while in Chapel Hill. Davis helped lead the team to an ACC title in 1991 and to a Final Four appearance in 1992. Hubert Davis left an indelible mark on the Heels program as a player, and still holds the all-time record for 3-point field goal efficiency at 43.5%. Not long after going undrafted, Concord’s Leaky Black got the call from the Charlotte Hornets, who signed him to a two-way contract.

“I couldn’t believe that it happened,” Black said.

That means this Carolina kid got to be a Tar Heel and a Hornet.

“It’s actually a dream come true,” he said. “Growing up, I never would have thought I would play for North Carolina and then play for the home team, Charlotte Hornets.”

Carolina is one of a bevy of schools to show interest in class of 2025 F Sadiq White, out of Charlotte. While Hubert Davis has already offered four elite forwards in the class, he’s clearly making a push to land top notch front court talent in this class and keeping an in-state player home is a priority. White does not hold a scholarship offer from UNC yet, but that is probably just a matter of time.
