The 23rd-ranked Wolfpack broke open a tie game during the final six minutes and defeated the Tar Heels 77-69 in ACC basketball at PNC Arena. The Heels fell apart late in the loss, a recurring theme for the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team this season.

No. 9 Virginia Tech finished off the season sweep over No. 22 North Carolina in style on the road with a 61-59 win. In a back-and-forth affair, it was Elizabeth Kitley’s night to shine, as she became the Hokies’ all-time leading scorer by finishing with a game-high 21 points (and 1,888 for her career). Not only that, she hit the game winner with the score tied at the buzzer. Kitley made it a double double with 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block for good measure. Kayana Traylor followed up with 20 points, shooting 4-6 from three. Deja Kelly had the team-high 18 points and 6 assists to go with 4 rebounds for the Tar Heels. Alyssa Ustby had 9 points and 6 rebounds in her return.

North Carolina hosts Virginia Saturday with an opportunity to pick up a resume-building victory in the hopes of landing an NCAA Tournament bid. Different from the first matchup, Carolina will have Pete Nance and Armando Bacot on the floor. Virginia is vulnerable, coming off a loss at Boston College and struggling with Louisville and Notre Dame. It’s a good Virginia defense but not an ELITE one.
