The calendar turns to June and we turn to our summer series, previewing the 2022-23 North Carolina men’s basketball roster. We will start with the freshmen and work our way through the roster. First up is Jalen Washington, from Gary, Indiana. Washington is a 6’9″, 210-pound PF who chose the Tar Heels as his dream school.

Washington has had some health concerns, dealing with two ACL tears in high school. UNC would greatly benefit from a healthy Washington, who could help fill the void left behind by Brady Manek. Washington’s skill set is a great complement to Armando Bacot’s and the two would pair nicely together in the front court.

DJ Wagner drops in the rankings. DJ Wagner who was best player in the 2023 class recently moved down to 2nd in the 247 sports rankings. GG Jackson who is a UNC commit was named the #1 player in the 2023 class. Did 247 sports make a huge mistake? Mikey Williams moves up to 12th in the 2023 class

NC State vs. North Carolina: The North Carolina Tar Heels have won their eighth ACC Baseball Championship Title.  They won the 2022 championship as the eighth seed, and they defeated the tenth-seeded NC State Wolfpack 9-5. Freshman Vane Honeycutt got the scoring done for UNC early, hitting two home runs and driving in five runs in just the first two innings. Honeycutt was named the 2022 ACC Baseball Championship MVP and he finished the title game going 2-3 with two home runs, five RBI, and a walk. UNC starting pitcher Max Carlson pitched 5.0 innings giving up just three runs and six hits while striking out six.

North Carolina vs. Virginia Tech: The eighth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels advanced to the ACC Championship Semifinals after defeating the top-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies, 10-0. After the Hokies scored 18 runs and hit six home runs on Thursday night, the Tar Heels held them to six total hits. Vance Honeycutt set the tone for UNC early, hitting a home run in both the first and second innings.  Honeycutt finished the fame going 3-3 with 2 home runs, 3 RBI, 3 runs, and two walks. North Carolina Brandon Schaeffer pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits while striking out six.

Incoming freshman basketball player Tyler Nickel joins the show for an interview. Tyler has several tattoos and shares the stories behind them. Once on campus at UNC, Nickel will room with fellow freshmen Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, and Will Shaver.

Nickel is Virginia’s all-time leading career scorer, knocking off names such as Allen Iverson, Alonzo Mourning, and JJ Redick. Tyler posted Steve Kerr’s press conference the day of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas earlier this week. Why did he share that poignant moment?

North Carolina has already secured two players in the class of 2023 – Simeon Wilcher and GG Jackson. Those two players are now each actively recruiting fellow class of 2023 recruit Matas Buzelis to come join them in Chapel Hill. Buzelis is the son of two Lithuanian professional basketball players and therefore unsurprisingly has an extremely high basketball IQ.

Buzelis’ skill set would fit well with any roster members still at UNC in 2023-24. One has to think that RJ Davis would be a senior guard on that team and joined by players such as Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles, D’Marco Dunn and this season’s incoming freshmen.

The Baylor forward is atop North Carolina’s transfer portal target list. Sean Moran and Sherrell McMillan of Inside Carolina’s Coast to Coast show discuss how Mayer would fit in UNC’s 2022-23 lineup and provide a scouting report on his abilities.
