North Carolina At Chapel Hill

North Carolina ran all over Hampton in a 62-32 afternoon victory. Neither team had a hot-shooting day, but the Tar Heels were opportunistic. Defensively, they forced 29 Pirates turnovers, turning them into 27 points. Deja Kelly led the way offensively with 12 points, and Boston College-transfer Maria Gakdeng followed up with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

North Carolina’s margins of victory thus far aren’t wildly dissimilar from last year’s, but yet we feel that this team is infinitely better. Why so? Is it that Armando Bacot and RJ Davis are a year older? Is it that the complementary pieces are better, including Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan?

Speaking of those four players, they project to be the top four scorers for UNC. Of the remaining seven scholarship players (Jalen Washington, Elliot Cadeau, Jae’lyn Withers, Seth Trimble, Paxson Wojcik, Zayden High, and James Okonkwo), who will be the fifth-leading scorer? Does it seem like a silly exercise? Perhaps, but it’s derived from wondering who will step up in a way that’s potentially unexpected?

After 2 games in the books for the 2023-24 Tar Heels, Sherrell McMillan and Sean Moran reconvene with host Joey Powell to break down how UNC basketball has looked thus far through 80 minutes of play. The panel discuss the good, the bad, and everything in-between. The show wraps with a recap of new signee Ian Jackson’s dynamic performance against Prolific Prep, and Sherrell’s insight into ’25 offered prospect, Koa Peat’s recent visit to Chapel Hill.

Lehigh vs. North Carolina: The #19 Tar Heels were tested by the Mountain Hawks, but UNC was able to pull away late to get the 90-68 win. North Carolina used their size to their advantage, outrebounding Lehigh 50-31 and outscoring them 38-18 in paint points. Armando Bacot had a 20-20 double-double with 22 points,and 20 rebounds in just 26 minutes of play. RJ Davis had 22 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Harrison Ingram added 14 points and seven rebounds.

The No. 16 North Carolina women’s basketball team (2-0) staved off a potential upset by Davidson (2-1) with a 74-70 win on Sunday night.
