After a couple weeks of bad news for North Carolina with Justin McKoy, Tyler Nickel, and Dontrez Styles all entering the transfer portal, the Tar Heels and Hubert Davis finally got some good news on Wednesday. After more bad news in the morning with Puff Johnson also deciding to transfer, Armando Bacot announced that he was returning for his fifth year, taking advantage of his COVID eligibility.

We still wait on news from other UNC players such as RJ Davis and Caleb Love, who would each be returning for their senior years.

Armando Bacot will play a fifth season at North Carolina. The two-time First-Team All-ACC big man, holder of the school’s all-time rebounding and double-double records, announced Wednesday that he’s going to return to UNC for 2023-24.

“I’m using my last year of eligibility,” Bacot told Stadium. “I felt it was the right decision for my future. … The primary reason I am coming back is because I don’t want to leave North Carolina this way. But I also know I need to improve and feel like this is the best place to do that.”

#NorthCarolina’s basketball offseason has featured a controversial decision to not participate in the #NIT and a number of transfer portal announcements. Joe Giglio can’t stand the freakout being had in select sections of the #TarHeels fanbase.

Repeating past season success is tough, but the Tar Heels became the first team in the 64-team tournament era to miss the tournament after being preseason number one. Pat Welter explains that sometimes returning starters isn’t always a good thing.
